Where can you find the world’s most famous chess pieces, the oldest known reptile, a celebrity sheep, a coffin in the shape of a Mercedes Benz and over two million insects? It can only be in the collections of National Museums Scotland.
Our collections span five main subject areas: Art and Design, Natural Sciences, Science and Technology, Scottish History and Archaeology and World Cultures. These categories help us classify the 12 million objects in our care.
Dating back to 1780, when the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland was founded to document Scottish archaeology, our collections have since grown to encompass everything from aardvarks and artworks to zinc washboards and Zulu fishing boats.
